Supported AI models

AI models available for use when building apps.

For each thread created in the Chat tab, builders can select which AI model to use to generate and modify their app's code.

Builders must select one AI model family for each thread. They can change models mid-thread, but they cannot change model families.

Supported configurations​

Retool supports different AI resource configurations for each plan:

Organizations on the Free plan can use Retool-provided models for app building, and are not required to configure an AI resource.

Custom AI providers are not supported in apps. Use one of the dedicated provider resources instead.

Supported models​

Retool requires a tightly-scoped set of models in order for agentic app building to be reliable. Effort levels for each model are set to high.

The following models are supported for building apps because they support streaming, tool calls, reasoning and thinking, and multimodal inputs.

Retool Mini and Retool Power are open-source models that Retool provides for building apps. They require no AI resource configuration and are in public beta.
