Learn about billing and usage for AI credits.
Overview
Retool's AI powered features use organization-level monthly AI credits. Your organization's plan determines how many credits you receive each month. Credits renew on the first day of each calendar month and do not roll over.
AI Credits
AI credits track your usage across Retool's AI features. Prompts that require more complex reasoning, larger outputs, or process more data will consume more credits, while simpler prompts use fewer.
What uses AI credits:
- App Building: AI-assisted app generation and editing in our new beta app building experience.
- AI Resource Queries: Queries against AI provider resources like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google AI, and more.
How credits are consumed:
- Credits do not roll over to the next month.
Credit Limits by Plan
Your organization’s AI credit allocation depends on your plan tier. When you reach your monthly limit, AI-powered features will be unavailable until credits renew at the start of the next month, unless you purchase additional credits.

Purchasing Additional Credits
On Cloud, organization admins on a paid plan can purchase additional AI credit packs to extend their allocation at their listed price. Packs are pooled at the organization level and expire at the end of the next calendar month (12:00 AM UTC), so you always have at least a full month to use them. Unused purchased credits do not roll over.
To purchase a credit pack, navigate to Settings > Plans & Billing, select the AI Credits tab, and click Buy credits. Credit packs are paid by card. Credits are available as soon as payment succeeds.
Credits included with builder seats are used first, then your organization’s monthly credits, then purchased credits. Among purchased credits, the pack that expires soonest is used first.
If you don’t have the option to purchase additional credits, contact your account executive.
Monitor Usage
Cloud organization admins can see purchased credits and when they expire in Settings > Plans & Billing under the AI Credits tab. Enterprise admins can also see detailed consumption, including breakdowns by feature, user, and model, in Settings > AI monitoring under the Usage tab, and can set limits on AI usage per user, group, or model. Refer to Set spend controls for AI usage.
Individual builders can also see their organization's remaining pooled credits from the Chat settings in the app builder's Chat tab. They can also hover over the icon below each agent response to see how many credits the agent used.
Frequently Asked Questions
How will I know how many AI credits I will need?
Prompts that require more complex reasoning or build larger outputs will use more credits, while simpler prompts use fewer. Actual credit consumption will depend on the specific tasks you perform. Retool recommends monitoring your usage to help you determine which plan is best suited for your organization's usage of AI-powered features.
Is usage calculated based on my organization or each individual builder?
All builders use the same shared pool of AI credits.
How can I check the number of AI credits my organization has used?
Cloud organization admins can monitor AI credit usage in Settings > Plans & Billing under the AI Credits tab. Enterprise admins can also see detailed consumption in Settings > AI monitoring under the Usage tab. The AI credits section shows your organization's total credit consumption over time.
Will converting classic apps to the new Retool app builder or importing React code use AI credits?
Importing React code uses AI credits for all plans.
Converting classic apps to the app builder uses AI credits on the Free plan. Team, Business, and Enterprise plan organizations can convert classic apps for free.
Do unused AI credits carry over to the next month?
No. Your plan’s monthly AI credits refresh at the start of each calendar month and do not roll over. Purchased credit packs also do not roll over. They expire at the end of the next calendar month.
What happens when my organization runs out of AI credits?
When your organization uses all of its monthly credits, it starts using any purchased credits it has. When no credits remain, AI-powered features are unavailable. Cloud organization admins on a paid plan can purchase additional credits. Otherwise, credits renew at the start of the next month.

Does building with Retool MCP through my own AI agent use Retool AI credits?
If you use a separate AI tool (like Claude Code) together with Retool to build an app, you're really using two different AI services at once, and each one charges separately. The AI tool you're using figures out what to build, which uses up its own usage or tokens. It then passes your prompt along to Retool's app building agent, which does the actual building or editing in Retool, and that uses Retool AI credits. You're not being charged twice for the same work. You're paying for two different tools that are both doing work. Retool AI credits apply to Retool's app building agent, and there's no setting to turn that off.
Is there a way to prevent my organization's users from using AI credits?
Admins can manage AI features within their Retool account. Navigate to Settings > AI. Find the AI App Builder setting and toggle the button to the off position.
